The Winds Undercurrent explores seaweed as an important indicator of climatic, cultural, and ecological stress. Handmade silk flags were dyed with a variety of seaweed species. Photographs of the abstracted flags dancing in the wind resemble the pressed seaweed specimens donated to us by Dr. Bob Hooper. The specimens stand in for the 40 year history of saltwater algae research that has occurred in Gros Morne. A small computer console draws thirty years of wind speed and direction data from Environment Canada’s weather archive, reanimating and relocating the wind within the gallery. The Winds Undercurrent was created during Site/Study an artist in residency program organized by Memorial University at Bonne Bay Marine Station.
